Hi, Hanna here! Many times students have told me that listening to English is very difficult for them. Native speakers speak very fast and blend the sounds together. Well I will give some tips on how to improve your listening skills today.

1) Start Easy

Best to start with listening material you are familiar with, the ECOP audio is a great place to start. You must be comfortable with this audio before you move the next stage, each stage could take several weeks.

2) Level Up

Move onto more difficult materials, like the longer sentences in the later sections of ECOP and dialogues from the Pre-Intermediate course.

3) Use a Script

At first it may be hard to pick up the audio alone, so read the script as you listen at first. Then listen to the same audio without the script. Repeat this process until you can hear the words clearly.

4) Be Patient

It could take a lot of repetition before you can hear the dialogue. Don’t give up! Remember baseball players in the batting cage…they have to repeat the same move over and over. Listening is the same. It may be boring but it will get results.

5) Special Material

Now move onto material aimed at ESL learners, for example BBC Learning English, Breaking News English, Lyrics Training or ELLO. These resources have scripts to help you.

6) Real Stuff

Once you are comfortable with ESL targeted materials, you can move onto materials like sit-coms, dramas and movies. I recommend Friends, Seinfeld, or The Simpsons to start with! They are short episodes, with clear spoken English about every day topics. Be prepared to watch with and then without subtitles many times!

 It may be boring to listen to the same audio many times, but there is no better way to improve. You know what they say, no pain no gain!

１）簡単なスタート

よくご存知の教材のKECのECOPオーディオから始めると良いと思います。次のステージに行く前にオーディオに対して不安があるはずがありません。各段階に数週間がかかること可能性があります。

２）レベルアップ

もっと長い文を聞いて難しい教材に移ってください。ＥＣＯＰの後半か中級準備が良いでしょう。

３）スクリプトを使用してください

最初は、オーディオを聞き取るのは難しい場合があるので、最初は聞きながらスクリプトを読みましょう。それから、スクリプトなしで同じオーディオを聞いてください。明らかに言葉を聞くことができるまで、このプロセスを繰り返してください。

４）諦めない！

対話を聞くことができる前に、繰り返し練習をたくさんすることが必要です。あきらめないでください！ 例えば、バッティング・ケージで練習している野球選手を思い出してください。彼らは何度も同じ動きを繰り返さなければなりません。傾聴力も同じですね。時に退屈な場合がありますが、繰り返し練習を続けることによって良い結果を出すことができます。

５）特別な教材

英語学習者の向けのおすすめ教材をご紹介します。例えば、BBC Learning EnglishかBreaking News English、 Lyrics Training、 ELLOをお勧めます。

 ６）本物！

英語学習者の向け教材を慣れたら、本物のホームコメディ、ドラマと映画のような教材に移ることができます。はっきりした英語を使うし、短いエピソードし、FriendsかSeinfeld、The Simpsonsからのスタートをお勧めます。

 同じオーディオを聞くことはしばしば退屈するかもしれません。しかし、上達するにはほかの良い方法がありません。「努力なくして成功なし」と言われていますよね！

英会話上達のためには､(1)～(6)を繰り返す必要があります。
