I read a sociological book about English people, (Watching the English: The Hidden Rules of English behaviour by Kate Fox), and in it she describes English people as incredibly shy, and we often talk about the weather. If you can memorize some basic conversation questions, then you can use one whenever you are stuck for something to say in any conversation! Let’s look at some examples.

Beautiful day, isn’t it?　いい天気ですね。

Can you believe all of this rain we’ve been having?　そんなにたくさん雨が降ってるって信じられる？

It looks like it’s going to snow.　雪が降りそうですね。

It sure would be nice to be in Hawaii right about now.　今ハワイにいったらいいんじゃないですか。

I hear they’re calling for thunderstorms all weekend.　週末は嵐だそうですよ。

We couldn’t ask for a nicer day, could we?　もっといい天気を望めないんですね。

Talking about current events　（時事について）

Did you catch the news today?　今日のニュース見ましたか？

What do you think about the transit problems?　交通問題についてどう思いますか？

I read in the paper today that the mall is closing.　今日、モールが閉店することを新聞で読みました。

I heard on the radio today that they are finally going to open the new bridge.　今日、ラジオで新しい橋がようやく開通することを聴きました。

How about those Giants? Do you think they’re going to win today?　 巨人の調子はどう？今夜勝つと思いますか？

The Office　（職場で）

Looking forward to the weekend?　週末を楽しみにしているの？

Have you worked here long?　ここで長く働いていますか？

I can’t believe how busy/quiet we are today, can you?　今日はそんな忙しい／暇とは思えないですね。

Has it been a long week?　長い一週間ですか？

You look like you could use a cup of coffee.　コーヒーを一杯お飲みになりたいようですね。

What do you think of the new boss?　新しい上司についてどう思いますか？

 

Social or Professional Events　（社交か仕事のイベントで）

Do you know the speaker/host?　 スピーカー/ホストをご存知ですか？

Do you know who’s speaking next?　次のスピーカーが誰かご存知ですか？

Are you having a good time?　　良いひと時をお過ごしですか？

Have you tried the sushi? It’s so good!　 お寿司を食べてみましたか？　とても美味しいですよ！

Who do you know at this party/event?　このパーティー/イベントで誰かご存知ですか？

The flowers are beautiful at this time of the year, aren’t they?　この季節の花は美しいですね。
